Wayne E. Bailey Produce Co. has been operating out of Chadbourn, NC since 1935. Innovation has been a hallmark of the company throughout its history. The company is leading the sweet potato revolution today, just as it has in the past. For example:
- In 1985 - operated the first packing line in the country to separate medium and large No. 1 sweet potatoes
- In 1990 - the packinghouse was the first to introduce electronic sizing to the sweet potato industry
- In 2007 - opened a brand new packinghouse with technological innovations throughout the facility
WEB's automatic sizing equipment allows flexibility in packing preferences. Using a 13-scale electronic bagger, the company can pack sweet potatoes ranging in weights from 2.5 to 28 ounces. 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10-pound bags that attract consumers with their upscale gourmet appearance are available. These bags are placed into corrugated cardboard cartons that weigh approximately 40 pounds.
Sorting sweet potatoes by weight provides foodservice customers advantages by giving them a more consistent size product.
On August 30, 2007, the company moved into a brand-new, 229,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility just three miles east of their former location near the heart of Chadbourn. This new facility is the most modern and one of the largest operations of its kind in the world. Under one roof, it houses the sales and operations offices, storage and curing facilities, packinghouse operations and truck loading facilities. New computerized equipment and bright lighting make for a more efficient operation. Combining the new equipment with the packinghouse's tall and airy interior, the operation is one of the quietest in the world.
Adam Wooten, the operations manager, and his crews are responsible for washing, grading and packing the product. Technological innovations provide cleaner and safer sweet potatoes. The end result is a longer shelf-life for our products.
WEB continues to lead the sweet potato industry with innovation, as it has for the past 75 years.
Upon opening the new packinghouse, truck loading capacity more than doubled to include 10 covered loading docks . The entire facility was specifically designed to control temperature and humidity, which has improved the overall quality of the sweet potatoes being shipped out.
Our commitment to our customers is to deliver top-quality fresh Southern sweet potatoes when and where they are needed.
